Andrew Mycroft, moved
to Honiton in 2001, and
felt there was a need for
a Folk Dance Club. He
started this in 2002, in
Gittisham Village Hall. The
Club soon outgrew these
premises and moved to
the larger superb hall at
the British Legion in
Dowell Street, Honiton.
(As you leave town on
the Cullompton road, it
is just past the fire
station on the right.) Club
nights are every Monday
from 8.00pm – 10.15 from
September to July inclusive.
It is an unusual Folk Dance Club, in that it always has live music. The Amycrofters are the resident
band. We have guest bands roughly every other week. Our aim is to have fun, make friends, get a
little exercise, and enjoy our dancing. If you have a partner or friend who cannot dance, they can
still come and socialise, while you dance. In addition to the usual Monday Club nights the Club has
run Saturday Dances and Several “Ferry Trip & Folk Dance” events at Turf Lock Hotel, on the Exe.
In February 2009 we ran a Valentine Dance in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Raffle proceeds
and donations went to the Heart Foundation. Dancers wore Red and White, appropriate colours for
both Valentines Day and the Heart Foundation. That evening, in two ways, “Dancing was good for
the Heart”. Over seventy people attended, a lot of money was raised and a good time was had by
all.
